About Dr. Rufus Akinrinlola
Orphaned by age three. A late start in reading. A journey to a PhD—and a life of purpose.
By the time I was three years old, I had lost both of my parents. Growing up as an orphan brought challenges that shaped my childhood and made the path to education far from straightforward. Yet those difficult beginnings did not have to decide the rest of my life.
I learned to read late in childhood, with patient help from my older brother. That support became a turning point. Through continued learning, hard work, and perseverance, I went on to earn a PhD in Entomology and Plant Pathology from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
My journey taught me that progress is possible even when life begins with loss, disadvantage, or delayed opportunities. It also taught me the value of people who believe in us and help us take the next step. I share my story to encourage others to keep learning, seek support, and pursue their potential despite the challenges they face.
Turning experience into impact
Today, my work spans science, entrepreneurship, writing, speaking, and community service. I founded Feed an African Child to help children access learning opportunities, and Wise Farmer to connect agricultural knowledge with practical action.
Through Better Impacts, I share books, articles, and talks on personal development, meaningful careers, resilience, and purposeful success. My aim is to help people grow, turn setbacks into opportunities, and build lives of contribution.
I believe that where you begin does not have to define how far you can go.
